Three One Act plays April 2024
Our current production is a night of “Three One Act plays”; “The Quiet Land”, “Bar and Ger” and “Centipede”
In “The Quiet Land” written by Celbridge based playwright, Malachy McKenna, we meet Eamonn and Nashee, two elderly farmers, old friends, old rivals, old neighbours. They meet at a gate on a remote hillside and their conversation is of a gentler time but there’s nothing gentle about today’s conversation. The Quiet Land is a celebration of the humour, resilience and endearing innocence of an exiled generation as it struggles to survive in the isolated rural Ireland of today. It is Malachy McKenna’s heartfelt tribute to a rare breed of forgotten men who live a long way in off the road. The director is Joe Canavan and the two men are played by Bill Elliffe and Brendan O’Sullivan.
Bar and Ger was written by Irish playwright, Geraldine Aron who was born in Galway but has lived in Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and now lives in London. The play is the tender, simple autobiographical story of the relationship between a sister (Ger, the author) and her younger brother Barry. Their story unfolds as the play progresses and through episodic flashes of dialogue they age while looking back. We watch them grow through short snapshots of their lives as children through to young adults. The play is directed by Camilla Pedersen and features Cathal Hayes and Rachel Butler
Our third play is Centipede written by our very own Frank Houlihan. In this play we find sisters Nancy and Mary sitting in their kitchen waiting for the phone which might or might not ring. Although it seems like a simple conversation where the sisters agree and disagree about various events in their past, it soon becomes obvious that Nancy and Mary share a dark secret which is slowly revealed leading to a climactic outcome. The director is Brendan O’Sullivan and features Breda Donnellan and Helena Stout as the sisters. The is performed by kind permission of Drama League of Ireland CLG
